FMP – Editing Colour

Editing Colour

Colour Correction
Due to the sun and clouds changing frequently, I knew I would have a fair bit of Colour Correction to do, which I did. I have discussed my decisions regarding lighting and colour in my Lighting Section. Some of the colour differences were even greater than for my test filming, which made Colour Correction Challenging.

When I was researching for my Year 1 FMP last year, I learnt that when Sam Mendes and Roger Deakins were filming 1917 (2019) they waited until the sun went behind a cloud each time to film each scene. I can now really see why they did that. However, they also said that it took ages, and I did not have ages.

I did Colour Correction to try to even out the clouds/no clouds colour and it is significantly better than it was, but not perfect. However, when I have shown it to people it has not been an area that has been brought up, although it still bugs me.

Colour Grading
A key area that area that I used Colour Grading in was to emphasise where I changed the Aspect Ratio. My decision to have a change in Aspect Ratio, for comedic effect, was informed by my research into the Edgar Wright film Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010) where Edgar Wright uses it.

I changed the Aspect Ratio from 16:9 to the cinematic 21:9 to emphasis a part where both Sam F1 and Sam P get overly dramatic in a comedic way, then twice they go back to normal very non-dramatic conversation. I feel this adds comedy. To really emphasis the change to even more cinematic, I added a blue tint where I had the 21:9 aspect ratio, which I feel achieves my aim.

Conclusion
I have developed my Colour skills further in this Year 2 FMP. However, I feel I still have a long way to go. This are of Postproduction is definitely one that I want to take forward to practise and learn more about, linked with what I said about wanting to practise exterior lighting more.
