FMP – Journal 9th May 2021

Even Busier week

I had thought it was already busy, but it got busier. But it is great to be doing so much filming.

But before that, Feedback from tutors. Because my plans keep having to be amended due to Covid, I wanted to check that my current revised plan for my Postproduction was realistic and covered everything that it should. I am aware that planning is an important part of my Year 2 FMP, which is why it is frustrating that elements outside of my control keep changing. It has knock on effects on every area. So I want to keep on top of it and make sure that nothing gets missed out.

So I asked for feedback on my Postproduction planning, and fortunately it was looking good and I hadn’t missed anything out. I also asked Simon (tutor) about masking in Premiere Pro, since it is fairly new to me. He suggested that it’d be better to try it in After Effects, which was very helpful advice and I will try that.

Now back to filming, my favourite part. I spent Friday filming with Adam for his Year 2 FMP. As part of his documentary, he was following the Photography technician for part of a day. It was fascinating filming and also seeing what goes on in the photograph department. I think Adam’s film is going to be fascinating.

I was also pleased to be able to put into practise something I had learnt during my Neo Noir filming in Year 1, that is how to stop flicker due to the lights when filming inside. Adam had noticed this was happening and I was able to tell him to set his shutter speed at the same rate as the AC, ie 50Hz here in the UK. It was great to be able to help with this, and it worked.

Then on the Saturday, it was filming with Elle for her Year 2 FMP all day. Again I was acting but I also got to help with the camera too. Ellie was using the same camera as I had, the Panasonic Lumix S1H. Neither of us had had experience with it before my Test filming and my actual filming. Having now used it a bit more, I was able to answer some questions. I enjoy working with Ellie since she is interested in Cinematography like I am. She has put a lot of thought into how her shots will achieve the effect she is after, and I like that.

It was another long day, but thoroughly enjoyable. This week has very much been what we would all have liked the whole course to be, as I am sure our tutors would have too – filming, filming and more filming.

Having to navigate Covid is making our 90% Bloopers group even tighter, as we help each other out, and it has to be said that is good practise for our working lives in the industry.
