“Time Song” by the Kinks and Time Travel

I found out an interesting piece of information about one of the songs that I am considering for over my End Credits. The song is “Time Song” by The Kinks.

What I found out is that it is a previously unreleased track from as far back as 1968. It was remastered and released as part of a 50th Anniversary reissue of “The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society” which is the Kinks sixth album. This reissue with “Time Song” on was released 26th October 2018.

Although “Time Song” hadn’t been released until 2018, The Kinks did play it live in 1973.

What struck me was that it is a bit like this song has travelled in time, from 50 years ago, which is quite a nice thought since it ties in with my Time Travel theme.

I find it quite interesting that when I was searching for songs with Time in the title, 3 that came up, and that I found I like despite never hearing them before, are all by The Kinks. I think I probably need to listen to some more of their music see what it is like.

I like a wide range of music, which is probably another reason why I found that Baby Driver (2017) resonated with me, since that incudes a wide range of music. I was fascinated to find that Director Edgar Wright had been thinking about the movie for quite a few years before he made it, and that he had been collecting songs for it for quite a while, and he had 10 songs earmarked before he had even written any words.

I really like that Edgar Wright says that he heard “Bellbottoms” by The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion for the first time in 1995, before he became a filmmaker. He says that when he listened to this music, he could clearly see a car chase in his head. Wright said, “When I listen to this song, I think of a car chase – what is the movie that goes with this vision?” And it the song that he uses for the first car chase in Baby Driver (2017).

Edgar Wright’s use of music in Baby Driver (2017) really resonates with me. He doesn’t just use music as a soundtrack over the action to give a mood, he really weaves the music in with the action. The way the sounds enhance the music and play into it is also amazing. And he ties the graphics into the Opening Credits scene’s music so well too. I love how it all just comes together. I love all the little details and I love putting little details into my films, like where I have the feet walking in time to the music and revealing and erasing the first 2 sets of credits. Edgar Wright is amazing and inspiring. I could watch the part of Baby Driver (2017) near the beginning with the opening credits on, where Baby walks along to get coffee in time with Harlem Shuffle by Bob & Earl, again and again, everything lines up, the music, the sounds and all the little bits like the graffiti. At about 02:28 even the police sirens are in sync, as are lots of the one-sided conversations that you hear from passers-by. It’s brilliant. Just in case you haven’t seen it, or like me, you want to watch it again, here is the link – enjoy.
